An introduction to Charles Warburg and Charles Bulfinch

Charles Warburg (Betney)

A manic-depressive cripple who constantly bores those around him with his unfortunate predicament.

Charles Bulfinch (Sarge)

A disassociated, nuisance aristocrat constantly in competition with Warburg over wealth and physical ability.

Early Perceptions

Though the rivalry between the two Charles’ is never ending, the two characters have strangely bonded. It seems as though the people you hate and should avoid are the very people you seek out, almost as if ones existence justifies the others. Both characters, it would appear, would be truly lost if not for the others presence, as if providing some kind of comfort in the very different worlds they live in.

Bulfinch’s arrogance knows no bounds, he chooses not even to learn the names of his man servants, quoting “establishing any kind of relationship, i.e. learning their names, with any of those who serve is just too much baggage”. He identifies them merely as MS1, MS2 etc…

A good example of their unique relationship is choosing to fly to Kentucky, even though it was far more dangerous, given that the pilot (Warburg) has but one arm.

More examples of competition

When deciding how to travel, Warburg announced he owned an aeroplane, Bulfinch announced he had a bigger and better model.

When checking into the hotel, Warburg gave the receptionist a $200 watch by way of a thank you, Bulfinch gave her $400 cash.

Following the evening meal, big cigars and many drinks, Bulfinch decided to retire for the evening and exited the room by doing a handstand, knowing full well that Warburg could not do so because of having only one arm.

I’m sure their rivalry will continue in even more interesting ways as the investigation continues.
