Background
To the inhabitants of the war-torn world of Oerth, the spellcaster Iggwilv is a footnote to history, an advisor and facilitator to greater evils. They forget that Iggwilv—master of demons, mistress of Graz’zt, and mother of Iuz—is a mighty witch, was once greater still, and that she conquered an entire region with her potent spells and demonic minions. Even today, when so many have studied her writings, and all have heard of the so-called lost caverns where she hid her greatest of treasures, Iggwilv keeps a secret or two regarding her rise to power.
For centuries, the mountain called Iggwilv’s Horn has been little more than a landmark, the guide by which explorers have sought out the nearby caverns of Tsojcanth. Its twisted and craggy peak has featured in numerous tales of mystery and horror, but always for what it represents and not for what it truly is. The time has come, at last, for the truth to be revealed. Iggwilv’s Horn is no mere landmark, but a wellspring of evil that taints the surrounding lands. The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth was only one of Iggwilv’s homes, yet it was here that the conjurer learned her greatest powers, scribed her greatest works, and congressed with demons. And it is here that brave heroes must eventually come, if they are to forestall the rise of an even greater evil, for Iggwilv’s Horn stabs not only into the heart of Oerth, but into the depths of the Abyss. . . .
Introduction
With your recent successes involving the Scarlet Brotherhood and the Drow, your party had gained an extremely favourable reputation in thwarting the more unwholesome inhabitants of the realms.
You were approached by a powerful, but aging wizard named Waldrath the Illuminated. He was looking for adventurers willing to take on the search for famed treasures in a place of infernal evil. Unable to resist, your party took up the challenge and found yourselves journeying to a place, known to those who dare to whisper its name, as the ' Tomb of Horrors'. The tomb was initially difficult to find, but was finally located in the Crawling Swamp in the Shadow Marches. The unholy resting place was heavy on death-traps, including spheres of annihilation, pit falls, and chests filled with deadly gases. You needed to be extremely bright, creative and lucky to survive, not to mention the battle with the demi-lich Acererak! Eventually, you made it through and smited the awful undead cadaver of the once powerful wizard. On your return to Greyhawk, your reputation was now assured, and your patron advised of another possible adventure involving great treasures and dire evil. He promised more details would be imparted that evening, and asked you join him for drinks and a hearty meal at the Copper Kettle Inn.
Waldrath's Request and Information
The players must travel into the Yatil Mountains, south of the realm of Perrenland, to investigate rumours of a lost treasure that scores of adventurers have perished attempting to find. The treasure is a remnant of the wealth amassed by the archmage Iggwilv, former ruler of Perrenland, prior to her presumed death at the hands of the demon Graz'zt. Such is the taint of evil in the area, much of its lore is shrouded in a blanket of maleficent fog. His only request of the players is that they find and bring to him the fabled Daoud’s Wondrous Lanthorn
Powerful magic cannot penetrate its depths, therefore transportation to the base of the horn is the best Waldrath can offer. Similarly, he will advise that such magic is useless in the moving around or exiting from the caverns. Additionally, Divination spells are unlikely to work. Finally, such is the manifestation of evil in the area, those creatures who have had a prolonged exposure have been warped in strange and in some cases horrific ways, trust not your monster lore, it will unlikely help you here
