Roxanna - Prolog Part IV

From Black Country Role Playing Society

“I’m sorry Helena.”

Helena stood silently, looking down into the dejected features of her husband’s oldest friend.

“He was already gone when we got there.”

More silence.

“The Drow took advantage of Zhentil Keeps weakened defences, and took nearly 50 people.”

More silence.

“Helena, you know I would do anything for Rupert, but if he’s not already dead, he will be after a couple of months in the Drow slave mines.”

More silence.

“I asked a wizard to scry on the Drow, to try and find Rupert, I would have paid him to teleport in and out again with Rupert, but he wouldn’t even make the attempt. I can’t say as I blame him, Drow citadels are rumoured to be protected against that sort of thing, it make sense really, otherwise they would have been destroyed eons ago.”

More Silence.

“Damn it all Helena! Won’t you say anything?”

“What’s to say Jaycen.” She answered after an interminable pause, “I had no right to ask you to go in there in the first place, and because of me Trisha is dead.”

Jaycen stood quickly “She knew the risks, we all did.” He answered hotly

Jaycen laid a comforting hand on Helena’s shoulder “Is there anything more I can do?”

“No Jaycen, you did all a friend could ask of you. Rupert wouldn’t have wanted you to throw your life away on a fool’s errand. May Sune walk with you Jaycen.”

Jaycen bowed his head and Helena placed her lips upon his brow and kissed him.

“If I can ever do anything for you, you just have to ask.”

“There is one thing, go live your life, the time I shared with Rupert was special, but it is over now, find someone special Jaycen, and fill her life with joy, as Rupert filled mine.”

Jaycen rose and bowed his head and left.

Helena stood watching his back as he walked down the path, desperately clinging to the shreds of her composure.

“You let him off light.” Remarked Wilbur, appearing from the shadowy kitchen.

“Oh, Wilbur!” exclaimed Helena, she ran the couple of paces to him and broke down into a flood of tears.

Wilbur held her tightly, stroked her hair and made soothing noises.
